What to expect during your comprehensive eye exam

Patient History

Our technician will start by taking your patient history to catalog any general health problems, symptoms of eye disease, medications taken, and environmental conditions that may be affecting you eye health. You will also be asked about any previous eye or health conditions of you and your family members may have had.

Preliminary Tests

Preliminary testing may include evaluation of specific aspects of visual function and eye health such as depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movements, peripheral or side vision, and the way your pupils respond to light.

Visual Acuity

We will also measure your visual acuity to evaluate how clearly each eye is seeing. As part of the testing, you will be asked to read letters on distance and near reading charts.

Keratometry

This test measures the curvature of the cornea, the clear outer surface of the eye, by focusing a circle of light on the cornea and measuring its reflection. This measurement is particularly critical in determining the proper fit for contact lenses.

Refraction

Refraction is conducted to determine the appropriate lens power needed to compensate for any nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Using instrument called a phoropter, the doctor will place a series of lenses in front of your eyes to measure how they focus light. The doctor will ask you to compare different lenses to determine the power that allows the clearest vision.

Eye Movement Testing

In order to obtain a clear, single image of what is being viewed, the eyes must effectively change focus, move and work in unison. This testing will look for problems that keep your eyes from focusing effectively or make using both eyes together difficult.

Eye Health Evaluation

There are several components to an eye health examination. First, we will examine the exterior your eye using bright lights and magnification to evaluate your corneas, eyelids, and conjunctiva. We will also use special drops to dilate your pupils so that the doctor can see the internal structures of the eye including the lens, retina and posterior section.
Lastly, the doctor will measure the pressure within your eye using and instrument called a tonometer. This measurement is used to screen for glaucoma.

Supplemental testing

Additional testing may be needed based on the results of the previous tests to confirm or rule out possible problems, to clarify uncertain findings, or to provide a more in-depth assessment. At the completion of the examination, the doctor will assess and evaluate the results of the testing to determine a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. He’ll also discuss with you the nature of any visual or eye health problems and explain available treatment options. In some cases, we may refer you to another doctor to treatment or consultation.

Contact Lens Exam

In order to fit our patients with contact lenses, we do an additional contact lens fitting on top of the comprehensive eye exam. There is a fee for this additional service which may be covered by your insurance. During the contact lens fitting process, our doctors and staff will take measurements of your eyes to find the best lens fit for you. Additionally, we will bring you back after wearing the lenses to re-check the fit and make any necessary adjustments. In some cases, it may be necessary for a patient try several pairs of lenses in order to get the best, most comfortable fit. We guarantee the fit of your contact lenses for one full year. If you experience any problems with your contacts, we will gladly make adjustments to your lenses at no charge.
